What To Watch: American Horror Story

Just like many others I’m sure, my plans are getting all kinds of screwed up due to the current state of the world. The only bright side is that there are millions of shows to binge while in this “work from home until further notice” status that I’m in. There’s a bunch of things that I’m currently watching, and plenty that I might rewatch (including the Kardashians!).

American Horror Story is forever a fan favorite, and I find myself going back again and again. So, for anyone looking to dive into this amazing show, here is my personal ranking of the seasons to watch from best to worst.

ahsQuick note: For anyone who has not watched American Horror Story at all, each season is standalone. The actors may be the same from season to season, but each one is an entirely separate story, so the seasons can be watched in any order. The only season in which does not apply is Apocalypse, which combines the world of Coven and Murder House together. There’s also a very small crossover in Freak Show and Asylym for character “Pepper”, and Lana Winters can be found sprinkled through many seasons.

coven#1: Coven
I could watch this season again and again and again and again and never ever get tired of it. The witch vibe is like nothing else, and this season is packed full of horror. I also feel like this season does the best job of not leaving any plot lines open; everything gets wrapped up in a way that feels complete. Obsessed with this season, for real.

murder house#2: Murder House
This season is fantastic! Just like Coven, this season also does a great job of wrapping up all the plot points in a way that feels satisfying. It’s fascinating, messed up, hair-raising, and brilliant. Another season that I could just watch again and again and again.

asylum#3: Asylum
This season is so fucked up and I am HERE FOR IT. Things for sure get wacky, and it’s definitely not a perfect season. But with electroshock therapy, secret Nazis, and aliens – I couldn’t stop watching. Shit is crazy, and I love it.

cult#4: Cult
This season scared me in a new and different way, because it’s basically completely possible that this could happen in real life. There totally could be some Trump-loving wacko out in the world right now just like this – ready to paint their hair blue and cover their face in Cheetos. I’m honestly getting freaked out just thinking about it…

19984#5: 1984
This is the most recent season of AHS, released just this past fall. I loved the 80’s references, the nod to famous serial killers, and the “summer camp” theme. There was a lot of new cast members, and some iconic ones missing, which was my only disappointment. Also not a perfect season, but will be watching again very soon.

roanoke#6: Roanoke
The first time I watched this season, I was so confused. It was like it was broken up into two parts in a way, which I was not expecting. It was better the second time around when I was prepared for the mid-season switch. Also included in this season is a random appearance of Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 winner, Trixie Mattel. Gotta love when your favorite shows cross-over like that.

apocalypse#7: Apocalypse
I thought this was gonna be the dopest season yet – I mean, a blend of my two favorite seasons in one?! But honestly, it was just kinda “meh”. It was slow to start, and a lot of it was undone by the end. I wasn’t completely disappointed, but it wasn’t as good as I was expecting. I will say, however, that I was happy with the justice that was found for Queenie in the end.

hotel#8: Hotel
I was hype for this season as well, especially since Lady Gaga was in this cast! But I never really recovered from the spiked dildo rape scene. It pretty much turned me off for the rest of the season, and I never could bring myself to rewatch it. That, and the fact that I couldn’t tell half of the actors apart from each other, made this season really suck for me. I mean, Ryan Murphy must REALLY have a thing for brunette men with blue eyes…

freak show#9: Freak Show
Worst. Season. Ever. Seriously. They basically just kill off every member of the cast for absolutely no reason, and then call it a wrap. The plot is so sloppy, which is such a shame for such a cool theme for a season. It was scary at times, but mostly just disappointing. I wasn’t here for it.

Now I KNOW there are people who are not going to agree with me. “How can you put Hotel so low?!” they’ll say. “Coven wasn’t the best!” they’ll exclaim. “What were you thinking?!” they’ll cry. But one thing is clear – this show is genius and legendary. And if you don’t know yet, you’ll have to watch to find out!

Let me know you’re thoughts! Comment if you agree, disagree, and which seasons are in your top.

All 9 seasons of AHS are currently on Hulu, and the first 8 are on Netflix. New seasons typically air in October on FX.

Stay scared!

Thanks for reading.
